I hear both at the same time. It's dependent on how old your ears are. As you age, you lose the ability to hear higher frequencies. The "Yanny" is a high-frequency that damaged, or old, ears wouldn't be able to hear. 

It's similar to a dog whistle. There used to be a bakery near me that had a dog whistle blowing at all times and it would keep the kids away. The adults were oblivious.

By the way, it wasn't a teenager. It was some big wig with a degree, pretty sure it was a professor too. Anyways he did it to test how people can hear two different things. If you increase the frequency it becomes Yanny, opposite for Laurel. However, you are correct with the actual word being Laurel.
