A ringtone is a sound that mobile phones use to alert their users of an incoming call or text message. They can come pre-installed on a phone or be uploaded by the user. They can be monophonic, polyphonic, truetone or sing tone in nature.

Different ringtone formats are used depending on the type of device and service. Some of the most common are mp3 and midi. Other formats include 3gp, amr, sckl, sipura, Nokia / rttl, and ott.
