Changelog Late May

I appreciate the work that Fitz is doing, and anyone else who is helping with these updates behind the scenes. I really do. But for the love of god please when implementing some of these changes just take your time and think things through. I do not have all the answers but it really hurts the community when things are being added to the server half baked.

The amount of things that are brought out broken and consideration hasn't been given into how their implementation is going to affect other parts of the server is crazy. Events and systems like Nikolai's, National HQ, and the Prestige system for a few examples are released and have to go through repeated overhauls and changes over and over again. Just in the end to completely gut them or remove them entirely. Things that are overdesigned and overcomplex. You know why everyone loves the bank? Because its layout is well designed, the execution is simple and the rewards are simple. Get drill, win bank, get money. Fight is fun.

It feels like desperation when we are paying people from other servers to come to Asylum in a feeble attempt to boost player numbers for a short time. Zero integrity, selling out for the sake of the sacred "Player Count". Its the same story with the high ping players/chinese gangs. Cant do what would be beneficial for the server experience because it will temporarily decrease our low pop hours. The past few patches have failed to address long term issues that people have had. We appear to be focused on attempting to copy other servers. Adding more and more and more items, vehicles, events, systems, money making methods, crafting, etc... There has been so much bloat for so long. There needs to be more effort put into streamlining the server experience for everyone, new and old players alike. Start actually removing some stuff, reworking and improving old additions that people no longer engage with. There are too many events, money making methods, systems and god damned map markers that might as well not exist.

Stop focusing on trying to copy other servers. People come here for the Asylum experience and we are unlikely to beat someone else at their own game. If you want more players which I'm pretty sure everyone here wants, start focusing on the server experience rather than the "Player Count". Build a better experience that Asylum is known for and the players will follow. One could argue that Arma 3 is dead and I wouldn't necessarily fully disagree but if other communities can thrive so can we. If you want to bring growth to the server, new and returning players need to enjoy their time and our current path of add, add, add is not working. Work on the new player experience. Identify the reasons they leave, find those quit moments and turn them into "I love this fucking server" moments that I'm sure many of us had when we started playing. Whether you joined us in 2014, or in 2018, or 2022.

All that being said, all the changes are not bad. There are good and welcomed changes that have come out in recent months that are enjoyable and good additions to the server. But overall our direction is headed into the dirt and I dont want that to happen. I'm excited for Arma 4 and I am sure it will bring new experiences for many people and many different communities. However I still enjoy Asylum and I want it to continue to thrive and survive going forwards so hopefully we can have a healthy transition whenever Arma 4 releases.

Whoever made the decision to move Nikolais without at first consulting with the player base should at least provide a valid reason as to why it was done. It was a unique fed event and could have used a couple improvements but there was nothing wrong with it. The gold bars couldve easily been substituted for blood diamonds or other expensive jewlery that way all you have to do is the run the boat to African and defend from the APD there.  Putting 50 gold bars in a sinkable boat, with the APD spraying you down with Armed Ghosthawks was the issue.

I'm going to try and address what everyone seems so kerfuffled about, and which I understand for the most part.  This is the exact issue that we as a community have had forever, its the same as politics.  The loudest people are the ones who get heard.  I add something and either people tell me they like it, or they complain about it, then we change it so try and help out the guys who didn't like it, and then the other guys tell me they hate it.

We had a community meeting three weeks ago, where I laid out exactly what I was going to be doing for this patch, I removed the tiers because people thought they were confusing, I reworked the Nikolais because people didnt like boat combat, I moved the stash houses because people said they were too close to the cities, and after I do that, people tell me they liked it the other way.  It is great that you guys have opinions about stuff, but when you dont articulate them I'm not sure what you expect to happen.  I said it to anyone that would listen when I got contributor that I was not afraid to try new things to see how they worked, we get feedback, and then we change things accordingly, but at the end of the day I canot divine what people want to be the gameplay, because rebels want more rebel stuff, cops want more cop stuff, grinders want more grind, city rats want city stuff, and then I try and cater to some of these groups and everyone else gets pissed off.

Nothing is half thought through, the prestige tiers were discussed for 6 weeks with the devs and the sas before they were added, and a similar time frame for removal, theres maybe 5 of us who are trying to boost the pop and carry this community through a tough time.  I don't see any of these complaints in the suggestions forums, I dont see them in my dms.  If you want something done or have an idea say it, if you support something say it, I envision patching again in the next week to rectify what seems to be an incredible amount of unhappiness, I'll be putting some polls up in the discord, if you want your voice heard, make it heard.

I doubt it was a ghosthawk issue. I don’t think I personally ever pulled one for Nikolai’s.

I know there was complaints of people sitting in scuba gear killing/downing people as they got in the boat. People complained when we used minigun boats. I agree it was a unique event, one I don’t think was entirely balanced.

The first half I felt was civ sided since the only way for cops to push was to orca drop or suicide run up the ramp. But once the boat spawned it depended on who was on cop, Lt+ cop sided because of minigun boat civs could spawn their own just is harder, if no Lt+ was on it was civ sided.

I think the new crafting is overall a good idea but it was also made so complicated that it was more of a step sideways than a step forward. I personally think it would be fine to not have all these new parts and processes but instead have the guns be very expensive to craft with existing items. Again, overall I think it is a good idea and adding more into crafting is good, but I agree with @Austin Rogers The Original that things are still too complicated.

I think calling out whats left of the community and essentiely calling them stupid isnt a good idea. As for saying things arent half thought what about the auction house it took almost a year to get all current items on there. The quest system seems to be an afterthought now new ones would be nice. Telling the community to ask for what they want or complain when there not happy has never worked and falls on deaf ears it appears that the panick has set in that as a result of general neglect of server content and fixes it is now unfortunatly likely to end this is simply not the communitys fault. People have asked for fixes rather than new content that never came we asked for a ping counter for over a year that is now only just being implemented hopefully. To put simply the community has lost faith in the devs admins and owner and are jumping ship its really upto the dev team to bring this back

He didn't call  anyone stupid. All he said is he gives group A what they ask for and it pisses group B off, then he compensates to make group B happy and it pisses group A off. Basically no matter what he does or who he tries to please it pisses someone off and they always bitch and complain because its impossible to make everyone happy so its a never ending cycle of complaints and unhappiness no matter what he adds/removes/changes.

I don't necessarily agree with that statement, there are plenty of examples of things that have been added that virtually almost everyone if not actually everyone has enjoyed and seen as a win, scotch and floating heli just to name 2 small quick examples, I do however see where he is coming from and its a valid statement in many cases at the same time.

I also respect the fact he tries new things even in the face of criticism and complaints to try out new systems and see what works and what doesn't and try to be innovative and new and offer something different than others. Where I have conflict and face a harsh criticism of this process is once it's realized it doesn't work or its a bad idea/system the development team will simply try to make it work at all costs and beat a dead horse endlessly and then double down on it even and try to incorporate it further into other future ideas that are bad or meh or terrible also. Ultimately it leads to a ton of wasted development time that could be better spent on improving existing things in the game.

I  personally had more fun on this server when things were simpler, easy to understand, worked as intended, and the map was less cluttered with BS. Sometimes less is more.
