Your best bet is to strategically position houses to allow you to make quick runs of whatever it is you want to do. For me, it was off-roads of meth from DP14. I would gather the ingredients, put them in my house, and then process an off-road at a time. 

I didn't even bother carrying a gun. You're going to get killed at times. It's a cost of doing business. The big thing though, is you don't want to have a vehicle that is enticing out and just your name showing inside of that vehicle. It's a sure way to get robbed. 

Think more about minimizing your losses instead of maximizing your profits and I bet you will make money faster. 

Yeah it's called grinding though... grinding is fun but it gets old.. sometimes you want to see some big payouts..
Great advice though. Best way to get started and get a base economy for yourself is to do exactly this.
